About Me

Janet Roberts

My name is Janet Roberts, and I am an instructional designer. I recently began my position as an online course developer for Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to my current position, I worked as an instructional design assistant at Engineering-LAS Online Learning at Iowa State University for the three years. Throughout my experience, I have utilized WebCT, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, and Moodle learning management systems.

Most of my experience involves the development of asynchronous online courses, developing instructional materials, restructuring courses to meet specific guidelines, and aiding instructors through the transition. I take pride in my ability to reassure instructors and train them to use technology effectively.

Some of the projects I've been involved in are highlighted in the "Projects" section of my portfolio. All are from my previous job at Iowa State University. They range from developing a series of learning videos designed to teach communication to engineering students, to developing a primate behavior course with an instructor stationed in Senegal. I have developed several media rich courses and have experience in obtaining copyright and streaming rights for audio and video clips. In addition, I have evaluated many of our courses and proposed improvements to other instructional designers and instructors. I am a firm believer in evaluation and the continual improvement of online courses.

I believe that my undergraduate degree in Technical Communication, combined with my Master's degree in Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Communication and minor in Curriculum and Instructional Technology, have provided me with a very powerful set of tools to contribute to the field of instructional design. I've attained a wide variety of skills, learning concepts of graphic design, video editing, and web development as part of my studies. I've worked with a range of tools, including, Adobe Presenter, the Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate, and Storyline. I put my love for technology and learning to use as I explore new ways to integrate technology into the field of education.
